Daal Chawal (Lentils & Rice) is the quintessential Pakistani meal.
This version has spinach in it, you don’t have to put it. Just put 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt first and then adjust it!
Ingredients:
- Chana Daal 1 1/2 cups
-2 medium onions
-2 medium tomatoes
-8 small garlic cloves or 4 big ones(smashed)
-1/2 cup Oil
- 1 cup frozen spinach
- 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
-2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
-2 teaspoons turmeric powder
-2 teaspoons cumin powder
-2 teaspoons coriander powder
For temper:
-1/4 cup oil
-3 dried chili peppers
-4 small garlic cloves( sliced thinly)
-2 teaspoon cumin seeds.
Directions:
- In a pressure cooker , pour Oil and put onions on medium heat until brown. Add smashed garlic cloves, sauté for a minute . Now add tomatoes and all the spices and fry for a few minutes, add 3 1/2 cups of water.Cover with lid and cook it for forty minutes.
Right before serving add frozen spinach , cook for another Two minutes and pour the temper on top.
For the temper:
- in a small sauce pan, pour oil and the listed ingredients for temper , heat it up on low heat and roast until garlic is light brown.
For Rice:
- 2 cups Basmati Rice( rinsed and soaked for 15 minutes)
- 2 teaspoon salt
-Water
Directions:
In a stock pot bring two quarts of water to boil.Add salt and then add rice. Cook for exactly 8 minutes, drain.
Serve with Daal!
